Dr. Gu was recognized as an Outstanding Young Researcher in Australia from Cure Cancer Australia in 2002 and was awarded the Sesquicentennial Research Fellowship (2004-2006), which was created by the University of Sydney to commemorate its 150th anniversary. He has also obtained research funding many times in his capacity as Principal Investigator. Because of his remarkable original discovery in natural immunity, he was elected to ARC Future Fellowship of the Australian federal government in 2012. He has received grants from the Australia National Health Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and other foundations. Dr. Gu has been studying the function and genetics of P2X7 receptor and its relationship with human diseases. He has published many highly cited papers in internationally renowned journals.
